Visiting Professor: Local Government Development in a Malaysian Perspective

Yogyakarta (5/12) – At this Visiting Professor session, the International Program of Government Affairs and Administration Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta invited Assoc. Prof. Dr. Halimah Abdul Manaf as the dean of the School of Government, University Utara Malaysia. Visiting Professor is an activity that aims to provide new insights that are closely related to teaching subjects, especially for students of the International Program of Government Affairs and Administration at Muhammadiyah University Yogyakarta (IGOV UMY). In addition, visiting professors also help deepen students’ knowledge of current issues regarding governance in an international sphere that they may not get in class.

This event started at 14.40, and was attended by all IGOV UMY students Batch 2021. On this occasion the presenters discussed the development of local government in Malaysia. Opened with an explanation of how the political system, inter-governmental relations, types of local government, and local authorities in Malaysia. In this discussion, the speaker also said that prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Malaysian government had maximized the use of digital platforms.

After that, it was followed by a discussion of various issues and challenges faced by the Malaysian government. These problems and challenges include, rapid urbanization, citizens have high expectations of the government that considers all countries the same, the ability of local governments to generate their own income, the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), and others. This event took place smoothly and the participants looked very enthusiastic, in the end the event was closed with a question and answer session between the presenters and participants. (ARP)
