UMY Summer School Explores Challenges and Opportunities in AI Innovation

Yogyakarta, Indonesia (AFP) – The highly anticipated opening ceremony of the 2023 summer school took place on June 14, 2023, with the theme “Opportunities and Challenges in Artificial Intelligence (AI) Innovation.” The event began at 13:00 in the AR Fachruddin B meeting room on the fifth floor. Dr. H. Emil Elestianto Dardak, B. Bus, M.Sc., delivered a keynote address, captivating the audience with his insights into the topic.

Deans, international program secretaries, focal point representatives, foreign students, and invited guests were among those who attended the summer school. The Chancellor of Yogyakarta Muhammadiyah University, Dr. Ir. Gunawan Budiyanto, MP., IPM., initiated the proceedings with a gong strike, symbolizing the official start of the event.

During his speech, Dr. Emil Elestianto Dardak emphasized the challenges that come with AI’s rapid development. “When defining challenges, it is critical to anticipate potential roadblocks that may arise as AI evolves.” “However, I am confident that with an expanding pool of human resources, there will be numerous solutions to overcome these challenges,” Dr. Emil stated.

While acknowledging the difficulties, Dr. Emil emphasized the significant benefits AI brings to society. He also emphasized the importance of Indonesia playing a pivotal role in AI implementation, owing to the country’s abundant capabilities. Prof. Dr. Ir. Gunawan Budiyanto, M.P., IPM., ASEAN. Eng., Chancellor of UMY, echoed these sentiments, stating that AI has revolutionized various fields of work while also posing a threat.

This honor prompted the theme “Opportunities and Challenges in Artificial Intelligence (AI) Innovation” to be chosen for this year’s UMY Summer School. Prof. Gunawan Budiyanto highlighted the event’s distinctive features, revealing that it differed conceptually and technically from previous years. Notably, the UMY Summer School, which has been running successfully for five years, provided participants with a choice of 18 diverse programs to explore. Among the noteworthy programs was the IGoPPS (International Government and Politics Summer School), an Igov initiative.

The 2023 UMY Summer School aims to provide an exceptional platform for knowledge exchange, fostering discussions on AI innovation, and addressing the opportunities and challenges that come with it. The summer school aims to inspire and equip attendees with the necessary skills and insights to navigate the ever-changing AI landscape, with esteemed speakers, engaged participants, and a diverse range of programs.
