1st Day of 4th IGoPSS: Christine Tenorio, Ph.D., Explores Advancements in Green Economy for Effective Governance and Policy Making at International Conference

Yogyakarta, July 27, 2023 – The 1st day of the International Government and Political Science conference witnessed an enlightening session on “Advancements and Developments in the Green Economy: Towards Effective Governance and Policy Making.” Dr. Christine Tenorio, a distinguished lecturer from Bukidnon State University, captivated the audience with her profound insights on sustainable development and green economy initiatives. The session was skillfully moderated by Dr. Reni Budi Setianingrum, a lecturer from the Faculty of Law at UMY.

From 10:30 to 12:00, Dr. Christine delved into the present framework of the green economy, which aims to foster growth while safeguarding the environment and promoting resource efficiency, carbon reduction, and social inclusivity.

She shed light on key policy agendas at both national and global scales, including the United Nations Multi-Agency Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE), the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), and the Green Economy Coalition (GEC). Dr. Christine highlighted the recent approval of the “European Green Deal” by the European Union in January 2020, a pivotal step towards achieving climate neutrality by 2050.

The session also offered a historical perspective, with Dr. Christine presenting the background of the green economy from as far back as 1798 until 2008. She provided a comprehensive explanation of the principles underpinning the green economy, including wellbeing, justice, good governance, the planetary boundaries principle, efficiency and sufficiency principle, and the principle of good governance.

1st Day of 4th IGoPSS: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Halimah presents “Malaysian Perspective on Empowering Good Governance and Sustainable Policy Making Through Green Economy Initiatives Presented at International Conference”

Yogyakarta, July 27, 2023 – The 1st day of the International Government and Political Science conference commenced with an insightful session on “Empowering Good Governance and Sustainable Policy Making through Green Economy Initiatives: A Malaysian Perspective.” Assoc. Prof. Dr. Halimah Binti Abdul Manaf, the esteemed Dean of the School of Government at Universiti Utara Malaysia, delivered an engaging presentation under the moderation of Reni.

The session, held from 09:00 to 10:30, delved into the evolution of main policy development in Malaysia from 1966 to 2030. Dr. Halimah provided a comprehensive overview, sharing valuable insights into the country’s journey of policy-making and governance over the years.

A significant part of the presentation focused on the green economy initiatives in Malaysia. Dr. Halimah elaborated on the Malaysian National Plan for Green Economy, which included notable milestones such as the Ninth Malaysia Plan (2006-2010), the Tenth Malaysia Plan (2011-2015), the Eleventh Malaysia Plan (2016-2020), the Mid-Term Review of the Eleventh Malaysia Plan (2016-2020), and the current Twelfth Malaysia Plan (2021-2025).

One of the highlights of the Malaysian green economy approach was the Green Technology Master Plan (GTMP). This plan focused on six key sectors: energy, manufacturing, transportation, building, waste, and water. It aimed to harmonize policy directions across these sectors to achieve the common goal of sustainable utilization of natural resources.

In summary, Dr. Halimah emphasized that sustainable development serves as the overarching principle underpinning green economy development initiatives in Malaysia. These initiatives strive to enhance environmental sustainability while promoting economic growth and building the nation’s resilience against climate change and natural disasters.

Throughout the presentation, it became evident that green economy development strategies in Malaysia are continuously evolving and are set to be further reinforced and augmented during the implementation of the current Twelfth Malaysia Plan.

Amidst a spirit of unity and pride, participants stood in unison to pay homage to their nation with the rendition of the Indonesian National Anthem, followed by the inspiring strains of the Muhammadiyah anthem, “The Sun March,” symbolizing a shared vision of progress and unity.

The distinguished Head of the Department of Public Administration, Dr. Tunjung Sulaksono, S.IP., M.Si., conveyed a heartfelt Foreword, emphasizing the immense potential of IGoPSS in shaping global changemakers. Discussion Regarding the Preparation of the Summer School”

Yogyakarta (25/07/2023). IGoPSS, the much anticipated Government and International Politics Summer School, is just around the corner, and preparations are in full swing. On July 25 2023, an important meeting was held in the UMY Food Room, where lecturers, IGOV staff, and participating students gathered to discuss their readiness for the upcoming event. Among the attendees were prominent figures such as Mr. Sakir Ridho Wijaya, S.IP., M.IP, and Mrs. Dr. Reni Budi Setianingrum, S.H., M.Kn, along with several IGOV staff and Aditya Fatmandadika Qurnain, students who will play an important role in IGoPSS. The main objective of this meeting is to finalize and refine the technical aspects of the Summer School, given its significant scale and international participation.

The discussion atmosphere was very conducive, and Fauzia Nauri Qisty as the Executive Secretary of IGoPSS expressed her hope that the Summer School activities would run smoothly and productively. As IGoPSS promises to bring students from different countries together, careful preparation is essential to ensure a successful and enriching experience for all participants. IGOVers 2022 Go To Pare, Kediri

The IGOV students of 2022, along with esteemed staff members Muhammad Naufala Rofi and Dimas Fawwaz, commenced their educational journey to Pare Kediri today. Eight students from the prestigious program participated in the enriching trip, marked by excitement and anticipation for the days ahead.

Departing at 6 am, the group set out on their adventure, making their first stop at Dafodil, an acclaimed English course organizer. Here, the students were warmly welcomed and introduced to the course structure and various options available to them. As part of the English Booster program, the participants eagerly absorbed the information, gearing up for an immersive language learning experience.

After a fruitful visit to Dafodil, the IGOV students proceeded to their accommodation, the Alfalfa Inn, where they were cordially received at 15:30. The inn promises to be a comfortable and conducive space for the students to reside during their stay, providing an ideal environment for focused learning and personal growth.

Adil’s Perspective After Students Exchange Program

Adil Ario, a dedicated student from IGOV UMY (class of 2020), recently completed an enriching student exchange program at the University of Pahang Malaysia. Returning to Indonesia after completing his program on 16 July 2023, Adil shared his experiences and insights with the IGOV staff.

In an interview, Adil shared the most memorable aspects of his exchange program, highlighting his various experiences abroad. He expresses joy in making new friends from different countries, immersing himself in different cultures, learning new skills, and forming meaningful relationships that have enriched his global perspective.

Living in another country positively impacts Adil’s habits and personality. He noted that Malaysia’s climate, similar to Indonesia’s tropical climate, had little effect on his physical health. However, he mentioned adopting the healthy habit of walking to campus and various places, contributing to his physical fitness improvement.

Like other exchange programs, Adil faces specific challenges while living in Malaysia. The distance from the dormitory to campus, around 1.5 km, is a problem due to limited transportation options. Overcoming this challenge, he developed the perseverance and determination to attend class regularly, adapting to circumstances with a positive outlook.

Discussing his academic experience, Adil emphasized that the education system at Pahang University in Malaysia is very similar to campuses in Indonesia. He discovered teaching methods and similar tasks and enrolled in industrial project management.
