Visiting Professor: Public Administration Theories

Yogyakarta (6/12) – The visiting professor this time raised the theme Introduction to Economics which discussed the topic of Public Administration Theory, an activity that is routinely held by the International Program of Government Affairs and Administration at Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta University (IGOV UMY) is a form of concern for its students for the sake of creating an international climate and help deepen students’ knowledge of current issues regarding governance in an international sphere that they may not get in class.

On this occasion, presenting a speaker named Dr. Wei Yang who is an international lecturer at the College of Local Administration, Khon Kaen University, Thailand was attended by all IGOV Batch 2022 students. It started at 12.32 and began with information about the ASEAN GMS scholarship from IGOVers 2014, Hidayatullah Hamim. After that, it was followed by material presented by Dr. Wei Yang, who opened with a discussion of the five paradigms of Public Administration and went into the core material discussing Public Administration theories, such as Critics of Classical Organizational Theory, Neo-Classical Public Administration, and Modern Theory.

Furthermore, the speaker stated that the concept of Good Governance is a combination of Classical and Neo-Classical Theories approaches which are expected to be able to provide effectiveness to civil society and create a successful private sector. The speaker also added an explanation regarding the problem of inequality in China Starts from the poor and rich gap, such as in Beijing, and other inequalities, such as economic inequality and social inequality. The visiting professor went well and the topics raised were also interesting, thus raising the curiosity of the participants who were accommodated in the question and answer session at the end of the event as well as the closing.(ARP)

Visiting Professor: Local Government Development in a Malaysian Perspective

Yogyakarta (5/12) – At this Visiting Professor session, the International Program of Government Affairs and Administration Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta invited Assoc. Prof. Dr. Halimah Abdul Manaf as the dean of the School of Government, University Utara Malaysia. Visiting Professor is an activity that aims to provide new insights that are closely related to teaching subjects, especially for students of the International Program of Government Affairs and Administration at Muhammadiyah University Yogyakarta (IGOV UMY). In addition, visiting professors also help deepen students’ knowledge of current issues regarding governance in an international sphere that they may not get in class.

This event started at 14.40, and was attended by all IGOV UMY students Batch 2021. On this occasion the presenters discussed the development of local government in Malaysia. Opened with an explanation of how the political system, inter-governmental relations, types of local government, and local authorities in Malaysia. In this discussion, the speaker also said that prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Malaysian government had maximized the use of digital platforms.

After that, it was followed by a discussion of various issues and challenges faced by the Malaysian government. These problems and challenges include, rapid urbanization, citizens have high expectations of the government that considers all countries the same, the ability of local governments to generate their own income, the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), and others. This event took place smoothly and the participants looked very enthusiastic, in the end the event was closed with a question and answer session between the presenters and participants. (ARP)

Visiting Professor: Analysing Regional & Global Climate Change Scenario

Yogyakarta (3/12) – Visiting Professor (Guest Lecturer) is one of the internationalization programs of the Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) which aims to present Visiting Lecturers from foreign universities, especially those who are included in the 100 QS World University Rankings or who have a cooperation agreement with UMY. The Visiting Professor Program can be proposed by two or more Study Programs, either under the same Faculty or across Faculties. The output of the Visiting Professor Program is the publication of research results with UMY lecturers in reputable/indexed international journals. In addition, with the Visiting Professor program, students can explore and receive new knowledge and knowledge that lecturers do not necessarily teach at UMY. It can also provide an internationalization experience for UMY students who register for the International class.

Therefore, the International Program of Government Affairs and Administration Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (IGOV UMY) held a Visiting Professor activity which became a routine activity at IGOV UMY. In this Visiting Professor, IGOV UMY invited Agustiyara, MPA., from the Eötvös Loránd University, Hungary. The activity was held on Saturday (3/12) through the Zoom Meetings and moderated by Nawang Kurniawati, S.IP., MPA.

In this activity, Mr. Agus brought up the topic of Analysing Regional & Global Climate Change Scenario which he explained about Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) dan Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP), These 2 things have similarities to projecting climate change in the future, but there are differences between the 2 things, SSP based scenarios further refine the previous greenhouse gas concentration scenarios known as Representative Concentration Pathways or RCPs. This is certainly useful for IGOV UMY students to become a provision when they become policymakers regarding the environment, where these data become a reference and not just assumptions in making public policies later. Encouraging Student Enthusiasm, IGOV UMY Holds Student Exchange Socialization

Yogyakarta (2/12) – the International Program of Government Affairs and Administration, Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (IGOV UMY) has just held a socialization activity related to student exchange activities at Maejo University, Thailand on Friday (3/12) via Zoom Meetings. This activity was attended by Sakir Ridho Wijaya, S.IP., M.IP., as the director of IGOV UMY, Adibah Dhivani Gusmi, S.IP., as the International Mobility and Cooperation division at IGOV UMY, and IGOV UMY Batch 2020 students who did not do the Student Exchange Program which is a requirement for their graduation.

The program aimed to encourage 12 IGOV UMY Batch 2020 to have an experience with internationalization. At least IGOV UMY students can take part in the Student Exchange Program which is their obligation for graduation requirements. These students were directed to take part in the Student Exchange at Maejo University, Thailand, which is currently open for registration until Saturday (10/12).

“This activity aims for encouraging IGOV UMY students, especially Batch 2020, to not postpone the Student Exchange Program activities which will be burdensome at the end of the semester, for that we direct them to register at Maejo University, Thailand.” Mas Sakir said.

As the director, Mas Sakir hopes that students can prepare for the student exchange program carefully. This is because the student exchange registration is near, both physically, mentally, documentary and financially to reduce unwanted things from happening. (ARP)

The activity was held on Thursday (1/12) through Zoom Meetings to fill in the Urban Governance course taught by Eko Priyo Purnomo, S.IP., M.Sc., M.Res., Ph.D.

In this activity, Mr. Dullah brought up the topic of Urgency in Theorizing Urban Governance which discussed Managing Urban Growth as a challenge in the twenty-first century. The focus of the discussion this time is on managing population mobility with the procurement of the MRT in Jakarta and roads that are friendly to cyclists. Besides that, the discussion continued with Water privatization, water privatization is when private corporations buy or operate public water or wastewater utilities. If this is implemented properly like in the city of Manila, the Philippines will become a strong opportunity to fight water scarcity. Through market competition, higher water prices, and cap and trade programs, water supply can not only be controlled but also be effectively managed. (ARP)

The activity was held on Wednesday (30/11) through Zoom Meetings to fill in the Goods and Services Procurement course taught by Prof. Dr. Achmad Nurmandi, M.Sc.

In this activity, Mr. Jazib brought up the topic of Procurement of Government Goods and Services “The Concept of Collaborative Government: Private-Public Partnership Infrastructure” with several scopes, such as G – G Collaboration & Partnership, Dangers and Growths, Belt and Road Initiative Indonesia, and The Rising & Sinking China. The reason why should collaborate is that it is a correct way of a contractual relationship between one or more government entities and one or more organizations of the private sector. Therefore, the result of the collaboration is making greater efficiency in every aspect. In addition, the collaboration is emphasizing value for money, focusing on reduced costs, better risk allocation, improved services, and possible generation of additional revenue. (ARP)

Held a Welcoming Party, IGSC Discussed Self Compassion and Critical Thinking

Yogyakarta (28/11) – the International Government Students Community (IGSC) has just held a Welcoming Party activity, a welcoming event for new students of the International Program of Government Affairs and Administration at the Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (IGOV UMY) and at the same time a ceremonial event that they have officially become fully a UMY IGOV Student and a IGSC member. This event was held on Sunday (27/11) and took place in Desa Wisata Pulesari, Sleman. Besides being attended by new IGOV UMY students, this activity was also attended by IGSC management and IGOV UMY managers.

This time the Welcoming Party presents the topic of Emphasize Self Compassion, Embracing Critical Thinking which focuses on caring and being kind to oneself in facing life’s difficulties and obstacles that will be faced through critical thinking. Some of the activities at this welcoming party this time are sharing between classes, games, ice breaking, outbound, and the connotation of queen and king for 2022. These activities were chosen to bond each class and increase the solidarity and critical thinking of new IGOV UMY students.

The Welcoming Party has mandatory activities that must be carried out, this activity is the determination of the king and queen of the class of 2022. The determination is judged by their activeness, ability to guide their friends, and how enthusiastic they are in participating in the activity. On this occasion, the ones who had the opportunity to become king and queen were Reyga Pramudita and Hasna Nabila. They said that they were very happy to be chosen as King and Queen at this year’s welcoming party.

IGOV UMY held a matriculation activity with the topic English and Abroad: Deal with English, then leave Indonesia

Yogyakarta (26/11) – As an International Program that has differences from regular programs, of course, there must be a similar perception and mindset for students so that they get an overview of the activities and obstacles they have to face when carrying out activities as International Program students. Therefore, the International Program of Government Affairs and Administration, Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (IGOV UMY) held a matriculation activity which has become an annual agenda that must be carried out.

The activity was held on Saturday (26/11) which took place in Pulesari Tourism Village, Sleman. This activity is intended for new IGOV UMY students so they can find out what they will face at IGOV UMY and the importance of being able to master languages ​​other than Indonesian. This goes straight with the topic used in this year’s matriculation activity, namely, English and Abroad: Deal with English, then leave Indonesia. This topic is used so that new IGOV UMY students can adapt and accept that currently, the use of English is very important to increase their value.

In addition, IGOV UMY invited a speaker and IGOV UMY Batch 2015 alumni, Mia Rosmiati, S.IP., to share her experience of how Mba Mia came from a small village with inadequate facilities to learn English and had to enter IGOV UMY who must use English in learning activities until becoming an English mentor. In the sharing activity, Mba Mia advised that don’t make language an obstacle for you to build relationships, make it a link so you get to know more people.

Studying Disaster Management in Bantul Regency, Exchange Students From Maejo University Visit BPBD Bantu

Yogyakarta (25/11) – To exchange information on disaster management between Indonesia and Thailand, the International Program of Government Affairs and Administration at Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (IGOV UMY) invited 2 exchange students from Maejo University, Thailand (MJU) to visit the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Bantul Regency. besides being a forum for exchanging information on disaster management, this activity was carried out to monitor and evaluate research-based internship activities by the Director of IGOV UMY which at the same time developed the mandate to become the PIC of the Program Kompetisi Kampus Merdeka (PK-KM) of the UMY Government Science Study Program.

As exchange students who are currently studying in Indonesia, of course, it would be a shame if they did not develop their thinking and stimulate their creativity through exploring learning resources in Yogyakarta which does not necessarily exist in Thailand. From these activities, they can find out how the emergency response plan to the strategy in responding to the emergency response in Bantul Regency. Apart from that, the activity continued with a seafood processed dinner at Depok Beach which could be new information for them because each country must have a distinctive taste image that makes the country’s identity.

Of course, this activity makes learning not monotonous and provides benefits for each party. Improving Cultural Information, IGOV UMY held a Cultural Exchange Activity with Maejo University, Thailand

Yogyakarta (24/11) – Increasing cultural information between countries is important in today’s global era where social interaction is becoming increasingly global in all aspects. Realizing the importance of this, the International Program of Government Affairs and Administration at the University of Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (IGOV UMY) conducted a Cultural Exchange program with Exchange Students from universities in neighboring countries, namely Maejo University, Thailand. In general, the purpose of this activity is to increase collaboration and interaction between students and more than that to introduce each other to the culture of each country and university. This year, activities are focused on introducing culture in Indonesia by making several visits to several cultural sites and tourist attractions in Yogyakarta.

The first day of Cultural Exchange activities will be held on Wednesday, 23 November 2022 with the aim of The Palace of Yogyakarta, Fort Vredeburg Museum, and Taman Sari Yogyakarta. This activity involved 5 students consisting of 3 batches of 2022 IGOV students who became buddies and 2 students from Maejo University, Thailand. Just like Cultural Exchange activities in general, they can find out how Indonesia’s historical heritage, especially Yogyakarta, and the culture of the empire which may not be much different from their home country, namely, Thailand, through a visit to the place.

In general, the first day of Cultural Exchange activities ran smoothly and was able to provide many benefits, both from a cultural and academic point of view. Culturally, this activity can make this activity able to introduce local culture more intensively and interactively. Meanwhile, from an academic point of view, this activity was able to strengthen cooperation between universities from Thailand and Indonesia to produce quality collaborative works for the future.
