Third Meeting of the Visiting Professor Program, The Students of IGOV UMY Still Showed a High Enthusiasm

Yogyakarta – Thursday (21/10) The third meeting of the Visiting Professor program at IGOV UMY raised the theme of Direct Presidential Elections and Its Effects in Indonesia and The Philippines was attended by 35 students of IGOV UMY via Zoom Meeting.
The program lasted for one week and was very anticipated by the IGOV UMY students even though it was held online. The visiting professor who taught the course materials was Dr. Andreas Ufen from German Institute for Global dan Area Studies (GIGA).
Many students showed their enthusiasm by asking a bunch of questions during the questions and answer (QnA) session. For instance, Satrya Dhillan Bagaskara asked Dr. Ufen whether there is a way to change an electoral system and whether there will be an impact on society due to the change.
Fairuz Arta who also participated in the QnA session asked, “Is there any specific case why every country has a different electoral system? What factors might influence the formation of an electoral system in a country?” he then added another question, “what is the most suitable electoral system for Indonesia?” such question was very interesting because as Indonesia, we are naturally curious about how foreign politics academician view the electoral system in our country.
“Maybe Malaysia will create a more proportional system in the future, Cambodia already has FPTP but still has an authoritarian style. Meanwhile, Indonesia also struggles for creating a proportional electoral system. As for Singapore, they need to be democratic first,” responded Dr. Andreas Ufen to the question during his closing statement.
“The system is based on several things, geographical is one of the indicators. The Australian system is new with its single transferrable vote. Which one is better for democracy? Canada is the best with FPTP. Thailand changes its election system regularly. Thailand is semi-democratic since the military is very dominant and influences its system. Each country in Asia or South East Asia has a different election system.” Dr. Ufen added. (DA)

We all can learn, it is never too late to learn.”

ORIENTATION EXPERIENCES AS EXCHANGE STUDENT IN USM BY DANNY RIZKY RAMADHAN

Orientation is one of the mandatory activities that every student does before entering the teaching week. This activity was held to introduce the new environment of the campus, introducing the campus life, also introducing the academic system to the new students. It’s one of the process of the new student to get adapt to new things such new culture, perspective, friends with more different backgrounds, new ways to socialize and other. For me, the Orientation is very important to new students because if we missed one explanation and introduction about the information of the place, environment, our studies and other thing that could be one of the important life changing in the future, we’ll absolutely struggling if we don’t know which kind or type of the exact environment where we have to live and study and we wouldn’t ready if it turns out that there are so many things that we don’t quite understand because we forget to pay attention and so on.

On Monday and Wednesday, I am experiencing the orientation that was held by USM for the new full-time students and the exchange students. For me the orientation was fine and went well since it was my first experience for having an orientation in another country. Actually, the orientation here on Indonesia and on Malaysia is pretty similar, usually the MC’s is like having a lot of thoughts, stiff and flat, so for me every orientation feels boring but funny, sorry to say. However, Indonesian ways of orientation is much longer than Malaysian. USM also play some videos about the diversity of tribes and customs that exist in Malaysia. The Ice breaking session is very interesting and exciting, because the games were different with the Indonesian kind of ice breaking session.

So for me the Orientation that was held by USM is pretty boring but it’s also funny. Before the orientation was started, I was nervous because I thought this orientation would a formal event, but it’s not that formal. And what I like about the USM itself is they are pretty good when convey the information that needed by all of the new students.

ORIENTATION EXPERIENCES AS EXCHANGE STUDENT IN USM BY LUTHFIYYAH PUTRI RAHMANINGRUM

I and my friends are participating in the exchange program. This exchange program provides by the IGOV and thankfully I got accepted to join the exchange program to Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). However, we need to hold it virtually caused by COVID-19. Even that, we are excited for participating this program. We were planning to join the classes in one room together, which is in the campus’s student hall.

Like yesterday on the first day of orientation, we gathered in the student hall to join the online orientation. Even it is done online, it is still fun because we did that together. We were lamenting our fate that we cannot go there and have the direct orientation. But still, the orientation taught us something new, like the Malaysian cultures and Indian cultures. It was fun watching the video all about Malaysia and the campus.

Then the second day of the orientation is today. We did not gather like the first day because we woke up late. Even that we still join the orientation and contact each other to know that we all join the orientation. Today’s session is about the timetable and the subject that we took. It was really nice that we can talk or ask the director of the schools and discuss the subject that we took and to avoid a time clash.

Even the exchange program has to do online, we still take positive advantages. We can learn something outside our major, and even be more close to each other because we will do the online classes together. Hopefully that the pandemic is over so we can have a flight to Malaysia and experience the offline class.

ORIENTATION EXPERIENCE FOR STUDENT EXCHANGE IN USM BY AWANG RAJAPRAKOSO PURNOMO

Orientation may be defined as a time of introduction, or the process of adaption and socializing that occurs when a person is placed in a new situation. Orientation is an introduction to determining attitudes in the form of direction and perspectives of one’s ideas. Generally, new students in school or new workers in a firm will go through an orientation session. An orientation phase is essential for anyone who is relocating to a new location or setting. This is done to allow a person to acclimatize well. Especially for new students, they must learn about their new campus environment as well as the field of study that they have chosen. Yesterday, USM held an orientation for the new students and exchange students, and as the student who join the orientation for student exchange program here is my experience for follow the event.

As an Indonesia citizen and a student who join the exchange program who experiencing the first time orientiation in other country, I was shocked because it is very different from orientation in my country. It was boring. Orientation must held with festivies and a joy, but I think this orientation is very awkward and flat, they held the orientation like they search how to make orientation in google and they not modified it, especially for the MC they brought the event very stiff and look like they did not want to deliver the event well. I think the interesting from this event is only the ice breaking, they make pleasent game who the students must search an item who given by the MC, and they give us 3 words and make it a sentence.

So the orientation that USM made succssesfully makes me shocked because it is very flat. However, it is full of information. For next year event I hope USM make a refreshing orientation so the new students are excited to studied in USM.
